Contract of Goal (with myself)

Imagine a child with a burning dream—so passionate that they’d do anything to reach it. That level of devotion, channeled with the right support, is golden. This “contract” is designed for those young athletes who already know they want to become a badminton competitor, yet aren’t sure exactly how to get there.

This contract doesn’t magically guarantee success. But it does make clear, for both the child and their support network, what the journey demands—and what is expected every step of the way.

It offers a roadmap for the learning journey, helping players—and their parents—to stay committed even through setbacks. Because a long-term goal is only possible when you make and keep promises to yourself.

Purpose & Mutual Support

Our shared aim (parents + coach) is to develop the athlete safely and intentionally. Parents are often closer to the child’s daily life—they’ll notice sooner if something’s off: injuries, mental burnout, or academic struggles.

The coach doesn’t absolutely need to know this contract exists, but it’s wise for them to be aware. That way, if the child starts putting too much pressure on themselves, the coach can intervene with balance and guidance.

A Caution for Parents

This contract is not a tool for coercion. Parents, please don’t twist this into a lever to enforce chores (“You’ll train only if you clean your room”) or guilt (“Imagine how the coach will feel”). If you do, you risk voiding the spirit—and the integrity—of the contract.

That said, I do believe that some responsibilities outside of sport must still be met. If schoolwork or life tasks aren’t attended to, attendance to training may be suspended. A great athlete is often a balanced student—and I value academic growth as much as athletic skill.

Recognising Life’s Realities

Life has a way of changing the plan. Sometimes, studies, health, or emotional well-being take precedence—and that’s okay. But if the child is truly committed, they’ll carve out the time and space needed.
